The savings could be...

The savings could be Astra-nomical! Vauxhall has launched a version of its hatchback which is eligible for £35 annual VED ð€“ and falls into the lowest tax band for business users. The new ecoFLEX emits 119g/km of CO2, placing it below the upper threshold for road tax band B and putting it into the lowest benefit-in-kind group for company car drivers. The engine produces 111bhp, which is 10bhp more than the current 1.7 CDTI, and 260Nm of torque. Itð€™s capable of 117mph, yet returns 68.2mpg on the combined cycle.

Engineers achieved greater efficiency from the drivetrain by using a taller axle ratio, optimising the engine management system

and reducing the motorð€™s idle speed.

Trimming the kerbweight by 30kg has also helped, while the aerodynamics have been improved by lowering the suspension, modifying the front air intakes and fitting a drag-reducing panel below the engine. Low rolling-resistance tyres feature, too.

The five-door Vauxhall is on sale now, from £16,340. It will also be available as a three-door Sport Hatch and estate.
