Here’s a golden opportunity for the Government to raise even more money from beleaguered motorists. A leaked Treasury paper – which has been circulating in Westminster – has revealed that Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling is looking to introduce an extra ‘purchase tax’ on models with high CO2 emissions.

The previous record was 85.3p in 2000, when drivers blockaded roads to protest at the soaring costs and government plans to raise taxes on fuel.
"This will be a psychological blow to motorists, who already pay over í‚á£1000 a year to fill up the average car. The UK has the cheapest pre-tax fuel in the EU, but the highest pump prices.
"We need to see the freeze on fuel duty continue and, longer term, a complete review of the motoring taxation system", an RAC spokesman said.
