The outgoing Pilot Primacy also performed better than other makes, but Michelin claims the gap has grown as competitors sacrifice mileage for greater grip in the wet.

Revised construction and compound are behind the new tyre"s performance. Under the rubber there is a more supple casing than on the outgoing Primacy to keep more tread in contact with the road, reducing wear hotspots.

Yet this hasn"t come at the expense of grip; our test confirmed the new tyre per-forms better on wet tarmac than its predecessor.

Aimed at large saloons, the Primacy costs the same as before - from about ?90 - and is available in around 20 sizes, plus ZP run-flat designs. For more info, click on www.michelin.co.uk or phone 01782 402000.
