Cars that can gossip...

Cars that can gossip to each other are being tested, so they can spread the word about hazards and make roads safer. DaimlerChrysler is working with US scientists to capture data from a vehicle"s electronic sensors. That"s transmitted to a roadside box, which then broadcasts it to other motors in the area. So if one car"s traction control detects a slippery corner, the information is relayed to other drivers as they approach the same bend.

The former unveiled...

The former unveiled the technology first - on its Q7 SUV - while the latter said that it would put a unit into the Cayenne in the future. Audi"s hybrid layout uses the firm"s 350bhp 4.2-litre V8 engine mated to an electric motor, which boosts torque by 200Nm to 640Nm in total.

This allows the big off-roader to sprint from 0-60mph in only 6.8 seconds - in normal mode without the battery"s assistance, it takes 7.4 seconds - and still return fuel economy of 23.5mpg. A Q7 fitted with the system will go on sale in 2008, but Porsche would say only that its Cayenne hybrid would be ready for action by the end of the decade.
