I"ve been predicting...

I"ve been predicting it, and – surprise, surprise – my prophecy has been realised. It’s now official: the great pretender touted as the alternative to the car has finally priced itself out of the market. For money and other reasons, we the public have decided that nine times out of 10, we prefer car cabins to rail carriages. And that’s official, too. Rail watchdog Anthony Smith has been reported in recent days as saying that rail travel “is for the rich”. He’s so incensed that he claims consumer protection on rail fares is “weak” and passengers are often left “with no choice”.

When I was about 10...

When I was about 10 years old, I worked out that cars don’t fall over and that bikes do, so anything on two wheels must be avoided. By 20, my idealistic youth was behind me, I cleared my head and gave up being a Communist. At 30, an air hostess poured so much wine into my glass with such grace during a scary 10-hour flight that I proposed to her on the spot. She stupidly accepted, and my status as an eligible bachelor was over.

The firm is testing...

The firm is testing a project called SmartWeb, which allows drivers to ask any question and get an answer in seconds. It"s voice-activated, so responses arrive within moments. The system works by sending the questions wirelessly to a dedicated computer which scours its Internet database and sends the response as synthesised speech. A prototype was unveiled at the CeBIT electronics show in Hanover, Germany last week. "The driver can simply retrieve the information from the device on demand," said Siemens scientist Friedrich Schön.
