The new Cadillac CTS Coupé was one of the biggest surprises of the recent Detroit Motor Show for two reasons. Not only was the unveiling totally unexpected, but the stylish US machine was fitted with a six-cylinder 2.9-litre turbodiesel engine delivering 247bhp.

Lewis Hamilton charged to the top of the title table with a dominant win at Hockenheim, Germany. The McLaren ace shrugged off a safety car period and a pit stop error by his team to finish ahead of Renaultò€™s Nelson Piquet and Felipe Massaò€™s Ferrari.

Three new family cars...

Three new family cars have been given a glowing report by independ÷­ent crash test body Euro NCAP. It’s just awarded five-star ratings to the Mercedes C-Class, Renault Laguna and Volvo V70. The top marks were handed out for good adult occupant protection – where each model scored 36 points.÷

The coolest movie motorist...

The coolest movie motorist of all-time is James Bond. Sean Connery topped a poll conducted by Churchill Insurance, finishing ahead of second-placed Steve McQueen as Lt. Frank Bullit and Batman, who came third. David Hasselhoff"s Michael Knight and Inspector Morse also made the top 10. Representing female drivers was Penelope Pitstop from the Wacky Races cartoon, who was fifth.
