The Formula One racers...

The Formula One racers are on their summer break, but the action behind the scenes is continuing at full throttle. Honda has revealed it is hoping to sign two-time world champion Fernando Alonso for 2009. In a deal believed to be worth ң7.6million, the Spaniard would line up alongside Jenson Button, replacing Rubens Barrichello.

Team principal Ross Brawn believes Alonso can turn the squads fortunes around. Speaking to Spanish newspaper El Pais, he said: Of all the drivers in F1 right now, he is the only one that I see as totally complete, in the way Michael Schumacher was."

But sources in the paddock believe the move would be a one-year deal, because Alonso wants a seat at Ferrari for 2010, replacing Kimi Raikkonen when his contract expires at the end of next season. Meanwhile, McLaren has confirmed Hungarian grand prix winner Heikki Kovalainen will stay put next year. The team believes the Finns maiden victory will be the first of many.

Team chief Martin Whitmarsh said: Heikki is a superb driver, and Im sure hell win again. Kovalainens next chance will be at the European Grand Prix in Valencia, Spain, on 24 August.
