The Department for Transport...

The Department for Transport (DfT) has decided it won"t change the rules about allowing learner drivers on to motorways as part of their training.

That"s despite the fact that the proposal, revealed by Auto Express in issue 799, had support from several key groups, including the AA, the Guild of Experienced Motorists and the British School of Motoring (BSM).

Keith Cameron, BSM"s head of road safety, told us: "We"re very disappointed. We feel that it"s a missed opportunity, and for no apparent reason. It has taken two years to do nothing." The DfT sought the views of more than 200 motoring groups as to whether the current ban concerning L-platers on motorways should be lifted.

It also wanted to know what restrictions, if any, should be put in place. Those in favour of the idea said driving on the motorway is very different to using ordinary roads and that training was needed. It was also argued that the move would raise the standard of motoring on the UK"s fastest highways. But those against the move said that it was too advanced a skill for a novice to attempt.
