That is the claim of...
That is the claim of General Motors" global product development vice chairman Bob Lutz, who revealed exclusive details about the joint project with BMW and DaimlerChrysler at the New York Motor Show.
Lutz said that the first hybrid GM-branded cars, probably American SUVs, could debut by the end of next year. And he admitted prices would depend on "how much we"re willing to subsidise the technology for good PR".
The hybrid system is being developed for production starting next year. It incorporates electric motors with four fixed gear ratios for various speeds and conditions. Likely models for the environmentally conscious technology include the Vauxhall Antara and Chevrolet Captiva crossover SUVs.
A future rear-wheel-drive Vauxhall flagship is also slated as a contender for the dual-mode hybrid. Meanwhile, Saab is developing an upmarket counterpart jointly with Cadillac for launch by the end of 2008, and this could harness the dual-mode hybrid. While initially for front-engined, rear-wheel-drive cars, the system"s compact format means it can also apply to front-wheel-drive models.
