Criminals and those seen as anti-social are facing unlimited driving bans. New legislation introduced this month allows magistrates to remove the right to drive from anybody found guilty of misusing their vehicle. This includes offences such as kerb crawling and car dumping. So-called boy-racers, who terrorise neighbourhoods, are also targeted.

McLaren was the winner and loser at last weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix. Although Lewis Hamilton dominated the event, leading every lap for the British squad, it scored NO points for the constructor’s championship after being found guilty of not acting in the best interests of the sport.

The triple world champion seemed on target for his fourth consecutive victory, but spun and irreparably damaged his Citroen while holding a comfortable lead on the final morning. “Fortunately we had our luck when Seb crashed,” said the 39-year-old Finn. “I kept the pressure on him, and it’s nice to see he doesn’t drive like a machine all the time! It’s good to be leading the championship again.”

Strike a light! VW is packing equipment into its Golf Match. The new model comes with alloys, a three-spoke leather steering wheel and connectivity for MP3 players.

As options, these would have added around ÷£700 to the price of the SE the Match replaces - but the newcomer costs ÷£380 less. There"s a choice of 1.6 petrol or 1.9 TDI diesel engines, and prices range from ÷£14,995 to ÷£17,370.
