Scientists have discovered that worn-out, old tyres can be shredded into tiny crumbs and put into filters - to clean dirty water.

Boffins at Penn State University, Pennsylvania, US, found that the rubber granules remove pollutants from dirty water four times faster than conventional, sand-filled filters. The research is being closely monitored by international aid agencies for possible use in poverty-stricken regions.
