A study by insurer Admiral found nearly 10 per cent of people from the area had been in a smash last year that was their fault. Drivers in Galashiels, Scotland, came out best in the survey, with an accident rate of only 3.9 per cent.

Sales plans for the Gibbs Aquada appear to be sinking. Launched in 2003, bosses hoped the rich and famous would snap up the í‚á£150,000 amphibious machine. However, no buyers have been found, despite Virgin boss Sir Richard Branson expressing an interest and Gibbs cutting the price by í‚á£75,000. A spokesman said the firm was now trying to sell the Aquada"s technology, rather than making vehicles.
