Research by leading cover provider Prudential shows drivers aren"t heeding insurers" warnings that taking the blame at the roadside after a crash can jeopardise any claim they make. The study also found that people often apologised in order to diffuse the situation or avoid police involvement.
Prudential spokesman Phil Southgate explained: "It"s a typically "British" trait to say sorry for everything, whether it"s justified or not. But the scene of an accident isn"t the place to decide whether you are at fault - a hasty decision made in the heat of the moment could potentially leave you out of pocket."
To make matters worse, UK motorists aren"t even carrying the necessary paperwork with them to record the details of any incidents. The Prudential study also found that 40 per cent of male drivers don"t have a pen in their car.
Southgate continued: "The ability to document accidents has evolved as technology has moved on. As well as noting details on paper, photos taken with a mobile camera phone can now be compelling evidence as well."
