True, on roads, tracks...

True, on roads, tracks, frozen lakes and in remote deserts I often test cars whose tanks have been filled by the manufacturers. But I also spend time driving around in a wide variety of gas-guzzling and frugal models which run on fuel I"ve paid for. It"s impossible to estimate how much I"ve personally spent over the decades. First revealed by Auto Express in issue 827, this model will break new ground for Jaguar, showcasing the firm"s new petrol/electric hybrid technology which will eventually spread across the range. Our images prove the Maybach Exelero has now hit the road. It was spied in Dusseldorf on a photoshoot ahead of the recent Essen Motor Show in Germany, and witnesses said the wild looks were matched by a fearsome sound from its 700bhp 5.9-litre V12.

Rumoured to have cost í‚á£1.2million to make, the Exelero was crafted by Turin coachbuilder Stola with money from Maybach and tyre giant Fulda - which has developed unique 23-inch low-profile rubber for the car. High-speed testing in Italy has proved the tyres are up to the job, too - the 2.66-tonne Exelero hit a 221mph maximum.
