Of most concern to Safe Speed are the figures on speed cameras: the number of speeding offences detected by camera are up by 6%, but the number detected by police is down by 29%.
Safe speed argues that this trend is detrimental to safety because speeding offences detected by Police have a positive road safety value while camera offences have a negative one.
Founder Paul Smith commented: "As drivers are more and more focused on legal driving they are less and less focused on safe driving. That"s why we"re 1,000 road deaths per year behind target. Our current road safety policy is directly and indirectly responsible for failing to save over 8,000 people in the last decade."
The claim that drivers are more focused on sticking rigidly to the speed limit in speed camera areas than on taking care of their surroundings may well be borne out by the 60% rise in careless driving offences revealed in the same Home Office figures.
The new home office figures are available here, and Safe Speed"s campaign website is here.
