It was a case of misery...
It was a case of misery to millionaire for two pensioners, after they sold their classic car collection following a spate of thefts from their museum. The Sharpe brothers of Rayleigh, Essex - both in their 70s - have bought rare vehicles since the Fifties. But they contacted Christie"s auction house after several of their 200-strong collection were stolen. Among the rarities sold was a 1914 fire engine, a 90-year-old bus and a 1902 Ford. This was valued at í‚á£15,000, but fetched í‚á£140,000! In all, the sale netted the pensioners a cool í‚á£3million.
More road tax dodgers...
More road tax dodgers than ever have been caught by the DVLA. New figures reveal that last year it managed to claw back í‚á£90million by prosecuting 972,000 motorists for evasion - a rise of 18 per cent. However, the agency admitted there had been a 4.5 per cent increase in the number of drivers not buying a tax disc. The car tax enforcement hotline (08000 325202), which was set up in May last year, received 134,000 calls in its first 12 months.
