In 1997, the message from the newly elected Government, which had Gordon Brown as its high-profile and extremely powerful Chancellor, was: “Things can only get better.” Fast forward 10 years, and the non-driving Mr Brown is, without the permission of a single voter, doing Prime Minister impersonations and even assuming the lofty job title, too. Mazda is keeping the 5 alive for 2008 with a raft of improvements

to its MPV. There are revised bumpers, light clusters and a new front grille.

Power sliding rear doors are now offered as an option. These are operated by a button on the driver’s seat, the door handles or the remote control key fob. And emissions and fuel economy have been improved across the range, with every model producing between 8 and 11g/km less than its predecessor.

This moves the 1.8-litre petrol and all the diesels down a band in road tax, saving owners ÷£40 a year. The 2.0-litre petrol versions feature a revised engine, while all models have the choice of two new transmissions.

A six-speed manual is standard and a five-speed automatic is offered as an option – a first for the 5.
