In issue 884, we showed the new car from the side - but these pictures, taken at the model"s unveiling event in Korea, reveal the undisguised front and rear for the first time.

From every angle, it"s clear designers have ditched the bumps and bulges of the outgoing car and penned a sleek shape. Inside, the Korean firm is shifting the Santa Fe upmarket. The dash has a European feel, while all models get generous kit. A third row of seats means the 4x4 is a viable option for MPV buyers, while full-length curtain airbags offer protection for all occupants. To make way for the extra seats, the car is 15cm longer and 5.5cm wider than before.

There"s a choice of 186bhp 2.7-litre V6 petrol or 151bhp 2.2 diesel engines. In the UK, the oil-burner is likely to be the big seller, and with 350Nm of torque at 2,000rpm it will provide plenty of pace. A new five-speed manual box is to be offered, as well as a five-ratio auto.

All models come with electronically controlled all-wheel drive, which automatically supplies power to the tyres with the most grip. A differential lock allows the driver to set a 50:50 power distribution between front and rear when off-roading. Expect base diesels to cost around í‚á£21,000 when the car arrives in the spring.
