In bike racing, riders slipstream to save energy (above). Now, researchers have proved the same happens with vehicles.

As a trial on the road was too dangerous, boffins at Jadavpur University, India, lined up four cars nose to tail in a wind tunnel. They found at 50mph, the second model in the line would need 12 per cent less fuel than the one at the front, while the third and fourth cars saved a huge 21 per cent. The idea could be put into practice when vehicles are equipped with the technology to sense each other and automatically line themselves up on motorways.
