DIY breathalyser machines are to be introduced to city centre car parks across Britain in a bid to combat drink-driving.
For ÷£1 a time, motorists can check if they are over the limit by blowing into a straw issued by the wall-mounted Alcolizer (below). The result then flashes on a digi÷tal screen. Three machines have already been installed by Q-Park in Glasgow and Leeds, but now there are plans to roll the scheme out to London and Manchester.
Trials for the kit, developed in Australia, showed 49 per cent of motorists recorded traces of alcohol, and 11 per cent of those were over the legal limit. Worryingly, 15 per cent of drivers taking part in the pilot on a Sunday morning also tested positive for alcohol, says UK distibutor Risk Shifters.
The units use the same technology as police breathalysers. However, a spokesman for the Association of Chief Police Officers has warned against anyone relying on the Alcolizer’s accuracy. He told Auto Express: “The best way for any driver to avoid being over the limit is to not drink at all.”
