A new 150bhp 2.0-litre...

A new 150bhp 2.0-litre diesel is expected to be the most popular powerplant, although a 2.4-litre petrol unit will be available, too. Chevrolet is also planning to develop a 120bhp oil-burner, although bosses have decided against fitting it in the Captiva, instead earmarking it for the Lacetti hatch. A powerful range-topping 3.2 V6 Captiva won"t come to the UK, due to the low demand for thirsty off-roaders here.

Survey results also...

Survey results also revealed some of the most basic checks and advice from car makers, government and safety bodies falling on deaf ears. For example, a staggering 72 per cent of drivers have not read the Highway Code since passing their driving test while 15 per cent do not bother to test tyre pressures between services, a crucial safety check.

Car air freshener makers...

Car air freshener makers Auto Expressions asked smell expert David Prybus to analyse 130 cars from 5 cities, and to rank their smells from 1 (putrid) to 10 (pleasant).

He found that cars from Slough smelled the sweetest (4 out of 5 cars got more than half marks), while those from Leeds and Edinburgh were the pongiest (more than half got low marks), with those from Bristol and Birmingham somewhere in between.

Prybus said: "The most common pungent smells came from cigarettes, rotting foods, drinks cans and blankets that lock in pet odours. With summer on the way, rising temperatures will make odours more prevalent, so motorists should really consider a thorough spring clean soon."
