Data from roof-mounted radar and GPS navigation systems is processed by a bank of computers that controls the steering, throttle and brakes.

Powered by an economical 1.3-litre CDTi diesel engine, the Toyota Yaris rival can comfortably carry three adults and a child. But it can also be easily turned into a one-seat load-lugger by deflating the rear bench and concealing it in the floor, and folding the child seat into the back of the driver"s chair.

Campaigners against proposed daytime running lights for UK cars claim the move would create an extra 0.25kg of carbon dioxide emissions from each car every hour.

Drivers Against Daytime Running Lights say that using lamps will wipe out 50 per cent of the 3.9 million tonne CO2 savings made in 2005 by the UK Carbon Trust. Britain currently emits 560 million tonnes of CO2 annually.
