Auto Express is the first magazine in the world to print pictures of the compact executive load-lugger completely unmasked. Although the car had been widely expected to continue to develop the "flame surfacing" design philosophy of its stablemates, these shots reveal that the look of the newcomer is likely to be a lot less adventurous than had first been imagined.

Central to the new set-up is its USB port. Hidden out of the way at the back of the unit, and accessed via an optional flying lead, this allows users to connect their MP3 player and listen to their digital music through the car’s speakers.

There were 522,000 black cars sold in 2006, which makes it Britain"s second favourite colour - in 2005 it was placed third. Silver is still number one, but the volume of models registered in this colour fell by 55,000 over the previous year to 671,000.

But we"ve learned that a showroom model is definitely on the way. A Peu-geot insider said: "The car has had a great reception. People love its combination of practicality and hot hatch ap-peal. Signing it off for production looks to be a mere formality."

Expected to wear the legendary GTi name when it hits dealerships in mid-2005, the newcomer will be powered by a 140bhp 1.6-litre turbocharged eng-ine. The leather seats will have interchangeable inserts, much like on the show car, with a choice of three trim colours based on the paint scheme. Also unveiled was the firm"s facelifted 607 range, which gets new bumpers and revised headlamps, plus mild interior changes. The fresh line-up goes on sale in Britain this winter, but buyers will miss out on the new flagship. The 2.7-litre V6 diesel will be offered in left-hand drive only, as costs to turn it into a right-hand drive car are too high.
