Boy racers have had their day - in Ireland at least! A new move by the Government there means that from next month, modified cars will be refused roadworthiness certificates - making it illegal for them to be driven on public roads. Transport minister Ivor Callely said: "We"re putting provisions in place to eliminate tinted glass, double exhausts and so on." The move is part of a wider crackdown on road safety.

"Ordinary tyre tread generates a lot of sound," explained Sandberg, who works at Sweden"s national road laboratory. "That noise is projected outwards from the rubber." Instead, this revolutionary wheel/tyre has hundreds of holes to let the noise pass through it. Sandberg is having several prototypes made and plans to fit them to a Volvo for a series of long-term tests.

But this wasn"t the...

But this wasn"t the case for Audi engineers putting their latest model through its paces in the US, exclusively caught by our spy photographers in this week"s magazine. They tried obscuring the exhaust instead! Bosses at the German maker haven"t confirmed that a sporty version of the A8 flagship saloon will be offered, but this is the first time it"s ever been seen featuring four pipes at the back, which is a trademark of the brand"s S models. The only other vehicles in the current line-up with the tell-tale design cue are S variants of the A4.

Nor could we help spotting the revised front bumper on the test vehicle caught on film by the mag"s spy photographer. It is much lower than the standard version, and incorporates three slots beneath the now trademark trapezoidal grille. Larger air intakes and a lower lip also distinguish the reprofiled design.

When it makes its public debut, the production S8 model is likely to be powered by a turbocharged version of the 4.2-litre engine. Bigger wheels than those on the car seen here are expected to be fitted, too.
