But there"s bad news for British rally fans. It"s available only to customers in America, even though its UK heritage was played up at the unveiling, where the model was hidden beneath a huge Union Jack flag.

Jack Pitney, vice-president of MINI USA, explained: "This marks a great event in Mini"s history. The Monte Carlo win put the car on the map."

Each of the 1,000 models will be identical, finished in Chili Red with a white roof and the famous 33-EJB number plate on the bonnet and 37 on the doors. A 40th anniversary logo appears on the rear wings, gearstick and driver and passenger footwells. There"s a GB sticker on the boot, grille-mounted foglamps and a number plaque on the centre console shows which of the 1,000 cars it is.
