Norwich Union"s policy is for 18-21-year-olds, and uses an in-car black box to monitor vehicle use. With on and off-peak hours, daylight journeys are cheaper than those made after 11pm - when young drivers are most at risk.

Lamp posts and signs could soon be used to help reduce congestion on UK roads. Exeter-based technology firm LastMile has developed a new solar-powered transceiver, which can be fitted into road furniture and used to beam traffic information into cars. It is working on the project with Qinetiq – the company which carries out weapons testing for the Ministry of Defence.

Bosses say the number of music options now on offer, including linking the stereo to other devices such as MP3 players, means individual buttons have had their day - there would have to be too many! The Glide-Touch will appear as an after-market accessory later this year, and become standard-fit on some models by 2008.
