Sound of silence a risk to drivers
Modern cars are so comfortable and sophisticated that drivers aren’t focused enough behind the wheel, a new study warns.
In a 14-mile road test, Brunel University’s Driving Research Laboratory found owners of new models are less aware of what’s happening on the road compared to those with older vehicles.
It blames the latest technology, which removes the normal cabin, engine and road noises that typically help keep motorists alert. Dr Guy Walker, leading the study, said: “Designers need to balance advances with motorists’ needs or the whole nature of driving could change completely, potentially putting lives at risk.”
