Although the car isn"t...

Although the car isn"t due in the UK until autumn, we brought you an initial glimpse of it in our issue 786 spy shots. And now the model has been officially launched in its native country, we"ve got the first pictures. The Gen.2 is a big step forward for Proton, with a fresh look that blends the best bits of many of today"s most popular vehicles. While the headlights are similar to those on BMW"s 6-Series, the most distinctive features are at the rear, where sweeping tail-lamps emphasise the sloping roofline.

Inside, the attractive styling continues into what looks like a solidly built and thoughtfully designed cabin. The light beige colour scheme may not be to everyone"s taste, but the unconventional layout will be popular.

Initially, the Gen.2 will get an all-new 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine, producing 110bhp. That"s enough to give the five-door a 0-60mph sprint time of 10.5 seconds with the standard-fit five-speed gearbox, plus a top speed of 118mph.

Thanks to the input of Lotus chassis engineers and designers, it"s hoped the new model will provide a driving experience to rival that of family hatchback class leaders. The engine range should be expanded in 2005, although a diesel version is thought unlikely.

Proton"s British arm is reluctant to give too much away, including what the car will be called here. It looks as though the Gen.2 will replace the slow-selling Wira, but the company is not prepared to release official details until closer to the UK launch.
