Aimed at fashion-conscious...

Aimed at fashion-conscious young buyers with active lifestyles, the newcomer could lend styling details to the next Freelander, which is due in 2006.

The Land Raver is made from light-weight alloy, and has durable plastic panels on its front, back and sides to protect the vehicle, both on and off-road. And rather than having the spare wheel mounted on the tailgate, as with the current Freelander, it"s kept underneath the vehicle and hidden by an electrically operated sliding hatch.

Inside, the Land Raver can seat four in comfort, and has plenty of space for sports and camping gear. There are even special waterproof cubbies in the doors for wetsuits and diving equipment.

The second picture suggests that Land Rover"s advance planning isn"t limited to future Freelanders. Called Pack Drill, this 4x4"s most notable feature is how far the wheels stick out from the body. Together with the impressive ground clearance, this should provide tractor-like mud-plugging ability. Again, the spare wheel is kept out of harm"s way, this time on the roof.

The vehicle also boasts hi-tech gadgets to match its futuristic appearance. A jet-style head-up display projects information on to the windscreen, and there"s even a device which allows the driver to see over the brow of a hill.
