A spokesman for the UK arm of the company said: "The car is here to show the United States that we do little motors as well." But interest was nearly as low key as the model"s presentation, with only a handful of onlookers checking out the blue and silver ForTwo.

That didn"t stop bosses from being confident enough to print the full Smart line-up on the back of the show vehicle, complete with space for a new model due in 2006. That vehicle, expected to be called the Smart ForAll, will be a baby SUV, and will definitely go on sale in US showrooms.

The news was confirmed by Smart president Andreas Renschler, who said: "The Smart ForFour is also the basis for our fourth model series: a Smart sport utility vehicle, which will go on sale in the States and Europe from 2006."
