A new survey from insurers elephant.co.uk shows that over a third of all drivers have used their phone while driving, with those in the North East of England the worst offenders - more than half of all drivers there admit to it.

Strangely the same survey reveals that nearly 90% of drivers in the UK approve of the legislation making it illegal - drivers risk a ÷£30 spot fine or ÷£1,000 if it goes to court. In the near future it is likely to incur an automatic 3 penalty points too.

In response to the findings, elephant.co.uk Managing Director, Ceri Assiratti advises: "Switch your phone off completely when you"re in the car on your own. The bottom line is that using a mobile phone will make any driver much less aware of what"s happening on the road around them."
